According to the City's Codified Ordinance, the City is responsible for maintaining the main sanitary sewer collection system by performing repairs and eliminating blockages.

Property Owner / City Responsibilities

The property owner is responsible for maintaining their own lateral service lines from their house to the City's main sanitary sewer collection system. The main sanitary sewer is normally located in the center of the streets and alleys of Marietta. The property owner therefore is responsible for unplugging their own service lateral even if it is plugged under the City's streets, alleys or right of ways. Various licensed plumbers are available to assist a property owner with unplugging a obstructed service lateral. These costs are the responsibility of the property owner.

If it is determined that a lateral line is broken under a City street or alley the City will make a repair under the street or alley, at no expense to the property owner. If a crew is dispatched and the lateral line is not broken, just plugged, then the City will invoice the property owner for the time, materials and equipment used as set forth in the City's Codified Ordinances.

Sanitary Sewer Investigation Services

The City routinely uses remote sewer camera investigation equipment to ascertain the condition of the sanitary sewer main and lateral lines. If citizens desire remote sewer camera investigation services, appointments must be made in advance. Some charges may apply as defined in the City's Codified Ordinances.
