Start Westward Monument
300 Block Front Street in Muskingum Park

As a familiar landmark in Marietta, the Start Westward Monument has suffered from the wear of weather as well as in the past serving as a climbing exercise for local children. In 1961 the central figure lost his head and Fred Mitchum of Beverly carved a replacement. A comparison of the details visible in the photo (left) estimated from the mid-1950s and a 2007 photo (right) show the erosion and differences in the central pioneer's head.
