The Public Works Department is a multifunctional and responsive department with five divisions: Streets, Traffic, Public Facilities, Utilities and Equipment Maintenance and is the city’s largest service department with more than 25 full time employees and an annual budget of $6 million. The department is responsible for planning, management, maintenance and construction of 80 miles of paved streets, city buildings and facilities, public lands, parks, cemeteries, utility services such as city street, parks, parking lot and building lights, traffic signals, emergency generators and maintenance support for water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant and aquatic center, city owned vehicle/equipment fleet maintenance and general city services.

The Public Works Superintendent is appointed by the Director of Public Safety and Service and performs complex supervisory, administrative and professional work in planning, organizing, directing and supervising the public works department, including environmental, street, traffic control, lights and other public works projects and programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees daily operation of the various public works divisions and ensures that required duties of the department are carried out.
  • Provides planning of future projects. Prioritizes projects and adjusts schedule as conditions change.
  • Works with and corresponds with regulatory agencies.
  • Supervises and works manually with any employees under his supervision and control.
  • Works with and provides input to city engineer for city expansion and upgrade of infrastructure.
  • Oversee snow and leaf removal and scheduling.
  • Manage the purchase, repair and use of department equipment.
  • Manage the purchase of materials and supplies for department.

The Public Works Foreman II is appointed by the Director of Public Safety and Service and is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of all City-owned lands, including parks, cemeteries, recreation facilities and buildings as instructed by the Director of Public Works and Superintendent.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides liaison services to individuals and/or organizations utilizing certain City-owned facilities such as the Gold Star Park Community Center and the various recreation facilities and ball fields.
  • Supervises preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Coordinates the sales of cemetery lots including providing required information for deeds and invoicing.
  • Schedules burials with funeral directors.
